Segments

We know a little about Alasdair and The Crown, and we've connected him to the city with a Habitation relationship. Now let's write what happens as he walks through its streets.

Write the first scene

In the project sidebar, choose Create Segment. Change its title to Alasdair - Chapter II (we don't have to follow any specific order), then add this excerpt:

Alasdair followed the descending road to the south that connected the empyreal court and the market streets. Common folk busied themselves with the simplicities of peaceful life as they emerged from open shops and market stalls.

His concept is his character profile and this segment is narration. You can keep both open side by side while writing, by opening a new tab and dragging them to the side.

How big is a segment?

Up to you. It's made flexible for a reason. Sometimes I create segments as chapters, other times they are just specific scenes.

If you like to…Try…
Write one scene at a timeA segment for each scene.
Work in whole chaptersA segment for each chapter
Write out of orderA segment for the ending.
Compare versionsA separate Alternate opening segment.

You can split a longer segment later.

Where do they belong?

Segments can live directly in the project or inside folders. For a novel, you might group chapters by viewpoint character. A short story might need only three segments and no folders at all. Or you might wanna group them on acts or in regions. Really up to you and your story.

Plan with the same pieces you write

Know you need a confrontation but haven't written it yet? Create a segment called Confrontation and leave its document empty. It gives the scene a place in your outline, ready to write when you get there. You can also already mention the segment in other segments or concepts.

Keep spare scenes!

To keep an alternate opening out of project totals, open its sidebar actions and exclude it from word count. It stays saved and editable. Include it again when you want it to count.

You can exclude a whole folder too. Everything inside stays excluded until you include the folder again or move the segment out.

There are other ways to keep branching drafts of a segment. We'll explore those, and how to save major revisions, in Versions.

Tip ☝️🤓 Exclusion affects project totals and activity used for project goals. Your current writing session still records words added and removed in excluded segments.

Exclusions

The exclusion controls are independent:

To…Use…
Leave work out of project totalsWord-count inclusion in the sidebar actions.
Hide work from the outlineOutline visibility in the sidebar actions.
Leave work out of a reading draftThe manuscript's selection.

For example, Alternate opening can stay visible in the outline, contribute nothing to the total, and be left out of the manuscript. None of these choices deletes it.
