Exporting your work
An export makes a separate file from your manuscript. Use it to send a draft, read on another device, or continue in another editor.
Choose what leaves the workspace
Select Epitaph of the Undying — first draft in the manuscript area. Check its entries and their order, including any front or back matter.
For our practice draft, that should be Alasdair - Chapter II followed by Alasdair - Chapter III.
Choose a format
Open the manuscript's Export menu:
| Format | Useful for | Check in the exported file |
|---|---|---|
| Word (.docx) | Editing or review. | Headings, breaks, images, and fonts. |
| PDF (.pdf) | A paginated reading copy. | Page size, margins, cover, and running text. |
| HTML (.html) | Reading in a browser. | Images, formatting, and page presentation. |
| EPUB (.epub) | Reading in an ebook app. | Navigation, images, and reflow. |
| Markdown (.md) | A text-based copy of the content. | Text and supported Markdown formatting. |
Markdown exports segment content without the full publication layout. Use another format if you need the cover, running headers, or page design. EPUB readers reflow the text, so they won't necessarily match a PDF page for page.
Choose a destination or complete the save dialog for the format, then wait for the export to finish.
Check the copy you'll send
Open the file. Read the beginning, a transition, and the end. Check images or unusual formatting if you've used them. Fonts and layout can behave differently in another application.
If text is missing, check the manuscript's entries. For page layout problems, review its presentation controls.
Keep editing the original
An export is a snapshot. Changes in Writality need a fresh export; changes in the external file don't automatically return to your segments.
Keep backups as well. An exported book won't preserve the project's concepts, relationships, maps, or settings.
That's our little manuscript out in the world. What you do with the remaining chapters is, unfortunately, still a writing problem. 😈
