Assembling a manuscript
Let's put the two chapter excerpts together. A manuscript selects segments and arranges them for reading. It uses the original writing, so edits to a segment appear wherever that segment is included.
Make a first draft
Open the manuscript controls in the application footer and create a manuscript. Name it Epitaph of the Undying — first draft.
Use its add controls to include Alasdair - Chapter II and Alasdair - Chapter III in the body, in that order. You can also drag segments from the project sidebar into the manuscript. Check which section you're dropping into.
If you made an Alternate opening or Confrontation while exploring segments, leave those out of this manuscript. The two chapter excerpts are all we need.
Arrange the book, not the project tree
A manuscript has front matter, body, and back matter. The body is enough for our first draft. Reorder its entries to change the reading order.
This order is independent of your sidebar folders. You can organise the project by viewpoint character and still read the book with alternating viewpoints.
Choose how entries appear
Use the entry controls for displayed titles, breaks, and other presentation choices. Set a chapter title here rather than relying on the folder name or typing it into every scene.
Removing an entry leaves the segment in your project. Deleting a manuscript removes its arrangement and layout, while keeping the source scenes.
Revise once
Edit a line in Alasdair - Chapter II, then return to the manuscript. You'll see the change there too.
A second manuscript using these segments gives you another arrangement of the same writing. To preserve different prose, keep it in a separate segment; naming an arrangement “first draft” doesn't freeze its contents.
Now open the reader and see how the excerpts sit together.
