Events and chronology
Chronology shows the dates you've given your concepts and segments. It's useful for checking what happens when, especially once the order of events and the order of chapters start to disagree.
Choose your calendar
Open Chronology from the project navigation. If it's hidden, enable Timeline & Chronology in Settings → Modules. Turning it off keeps your dates and calendar settings.
Use Configure Time System to choose a calendar preset or define your own months, days, and eras. Epitaph of the Undying doesn't need to inherit real-world month names.
Set this up before assigning dates you care about. Changing the calendar can change how existing dates are interpreted, so make a backup before substantial changes in an established project.
Give a concept a date
Create a concept named Walk through The Crown for our practice event. Open its sidebar and find Attributes:
- Use the section's add control to start an attribute.
- In Attribute type, choose Date.
- Give it a label such as Walk through The Crown.
- Open the date value, choose a date, and use the row's Save checkmark.
Pick any date for this exercise. We're trying the controls, so it doesn't need to become part of your story.
You can give dates directly to characters, places, and segments too. There's no need to create an event concept for every dated scene.
Choose the precision you know: a year, a month, or a complete day. Use the picker's precision controls to leave the rest open. A range works for something that continues over time.
Use a relative date when the interval matters
Create another concept named Return to the market and add a Date attribute. In the picker, choose Relative date, then Choose an anchor. Select Walk through The Crown, choose before or after, enter an interval, and save.
If you set the return two days after the walk, moving the walk's date moves the return with it. The interval stays the same.
Share an event deliberately
Several concepts or segments may refer to the same event. A shared date lets them use one entry.
To try this with our practice event, open Alasdair (or create his concept if you started here). Add a Date attribute labelled Walk through The Crown and give it the same date and precision as the event concept.
Save the attribute, then open its date suggestion indicator. Review Are these the same date?, select the character's and event's matching entries, and choose Link selected.
Matching values alone don't make two entries the same event. Check what they refer to before linking them. Editing a shared date affects every linked item.
Manage shared date lets you unlink the current item or delete the shared date for everyone. Check which action you're choosing.
Read time without rearranging the book
Return to Chronology and zoom to a useful scale. Open an entry to inspect its date, then follow the source concept or segment for the writing.
Story dates don't rearrange folders or manuscript entries. A flashback can come late in the book and early in chronology.
If an entry is missing, check its saved date, calendar, and the timeline's visible range. Dates come from the attributes you've entered, rather than being guessed from the prose.
