Obsidian is amazing.
Love Obsidian, love the team, love the vibes. It is fast, local-first, and genuinely actually seems built by people who care about what they are building and stay true to their vision. Amazing community and ecosystem too.
TLDR;
Why I built Writality anyway
I don't want to download 50 different plugins to make the app work for creative writing though. This is where Writality comes in. I have taken great inspiration from Obsidian.
Where Writality may fit you better
- Writers who want a focused and ready tool for writing.
- Writers who want to format and structure their writing for publication.
- People who don't want to go through countless plugins to get started.
How the features compare
| Feature | Writality | Obsidian |
|---|---|---|
| Writing & structure | Chapters and scenes, flexible folders, and manuscripts assembled from segments | Markdown notes and folders; extend the workflow with community plugins |
| Worldbuilding & connections | Custom concepts, attributes, mentions, backlinks, and labelled relationships | Linked notes, backlinks, properties, and a graph |
| Visual planning | Maps with layers and pins, relationship graphs, kanban, and custom calendars | Canvas and graph views, with more tools available through plugins |
| Working offline | Local desktop projects; no account or connection needed to write | Notes stored on your device and available offline |
| Cost | Free, with no subscription or per-project limits | Free app; optional paid Sync and Publish services |
| Sharing & publishing | Paginated manuscript reader; PDF, DOCX, HTML, EPUB, and Markdown export | Local Markdown files; optional Publish for an online wiki |
Guys please understand this is just my perspective. Plans and availability can change, I probably will not be returning here often to update these pages. Check the official details for the version you intend to use.
