I am sure most of you are already aware of Notion, so not much else to say here.
I understand why so many people write in Notion. It has a very nice editor, sleek, modern UI and a very generous free tier. Used it a lot as a student and it's pretty neat.
TLDR;
| Tool | Choose it when | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| Writality | Writers who want a dedicated creative writing workflow | Free, offline writing with worldbuilding beside the manuscript. |
| Notion | You want a flexible workspace for notes, databases, and team workflows. | I am sure most of you are already aware of Notion, so not much else to say here. |
Why I built Writality anyway
The problem for me was that it does too much, and its focus seems to be in workflows and businesses other than actual writing. Writality is focused. Creative writing in all its forms. Be it worldbuilding, writing a novel, a game story...
Where Writality may fit you better
- Writers who want a dedicated creative writing workflow
- Projects that are narrative driven
- People who do not want to spend time assembling their own writing system
How the features compare
| Feature | Writality | Notion |
|---|---|---|
| Writing & structure | Chapters and scenes, flexible folders, and manuscripts assembled from segments | Block-based pages and databases; you arrange the writing workflow |
| Worldbuilding & connections | Custom concepts, attributes, mentions, backlinks, and labelled relationships | Build your own wiki and linked databases |
| Visual planning | Maps with layers and pins, relationship graphs, kanban, and custom calendars | Database views and boards for your own planning system |
| Working offline | Local desktop projects; no account or connection needed to write | Download individual pages in the desktop or mobile app; subpages need separate downloads |
| Cost | Free, with no subscription or per-project limits | Free tier, with paid plans for additional capabilities |
| Sharing & publishing | Paginated manuscript reader; PDF, DOCX, HTML, EPUB, and Markdown export | Shared pages, published sites, and page exports |
Guys please understand this is just my perspective. Plans and availability can change, I probably will not be returning here often to update these pages. Check the official details for the version you intend to use.
