It works, and it is familiar.
There is a reason people default to Google Docs. It is familiar, quick to open, and simple to share.
TLDR;
| Tool | Choose it when | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| Writality | Writers moving beyond plain document drafting | Free, offline writing with worldbuilding beside the manuscript. |
| Google Docs | You want a familiar document you can share and edit with other people. | It works, and it is familiar. |
Why I built Writality anyway
The tradeoff is that it stays a document tool. Once a project has structure, references, and worldbuilding around it, I start feeling the limits quickly. Writality is built for the whole writing project, not just the page of text in front of me. I also prefer keeping my writing in a local workspace.
Where Writality may fit you better
- Writers moving beyond plain document drafting
- Projects with characters, lore, and notes tied to the manuscript
- People who want the writing tool to provide more structure by default
How the features compare
| Feature | Writality | Google Docs |
|---|---|---|
| Writing & structure | Chapters and scenes, flexible folders, and manuscripts assembled from segments | Documents with headings, tabs, comments, and suggestions |
| Worldbuilding & connections | Custom concepts, attributes, mentions, backlinks, and labelled relationships | Organise your own reference documents and links |
| Visual planning | Maps with layers and pins, relationship graphs, kanban, and custom calendars | Document outlines; broader project planning lives in other tools |
| Working offline | Local desktop projects; no account or connection needed to write | Offline document editing is available with setup |
| Cost | Free, with no subscription or per-project limits | Available with a Google Account; additional features in paid Workspace plans |
| Sharing & publishing | Paginated manuscript reader; PDF, DOCX, HTML, EPUB, and Markdown export | Real-time co-editing, sharing, and document downloads |
Guys please understand this is just my perspective. Plans and availability can change, I probably will not be returning here often to update these pages. Check the official details for the version you intend to use.
