WORLDBUILDING SOFTWARE
Worldbuilding and writing and messing around
I love worldbuilding. I really do. But sometimes when I worldbuild, I get completely sucked into it for three weeks, and I come out of that process with a beautifully constructed calendar and no story whatsoever.
For me, what works is having my characters, locations, factions, events, traditions, magic systems, laws, images, and everything else from the worldbuilding right next to my writing. In the folder that I've promised myself I'll organise one day but never have.
BRIEF EXPLANATION
Writality is a worldbuilding software designed for writers who desire characters, settings, plot points, time frames, images, the manuscript, and basically everything you need to write a novel or creative work in one place.
ISSUE
There are many great worldbuilding tools out there that can help you create an entire encyclopedia of information for your story world. Cool! You go through all the trouble of writing the royal tax system and somehow the chapter is still blank.
THE SOLUTION 🕴
Writality combines concepts, connections, timeline, and draft fragments into one space because that's what I desired out of worldbuilding software.
CONCEPTS
The concept can be anything you want it to be
Some concepts are self-explanatory: a character, a city, a faction. But then the project does its thing and all of a sudden, something else becomes important: a family curse, the kind of tea, a law, a war, or even a particular door.
I don't want you to let the tool interfere too much with your creativity. When you're writing a story, you need to mess around until it makes sense. The tool just helps you do so in a more organized way.
RELATIONSHIPS
Links fit into the world you create
Two characters can be siblings, rivals, lovers, allies, debtors, teachers, traitors, heirs, or strangers whose actions completely destroy one another's life during one scene. The city can be a part of the empire. The relic can be in possession of somebody who didn't deserve that at all.
This is the dirty practical aspect. See how everything in your story can relate to each other?
CHRONOLOGY
Things are happening all the time!
Time only becomes relevant when the scope of the project increases. A character has an exact date of birth. A war was fought prior to the ongoing chaos. There will be a festival in three days. A calendar system exists because obviously your world would not conform to our dating system.
QUESTIONS
No bad questions
Is Writality only for fantasy worldbuilding?
Fantasy fits easily, and the system is broad on purpose. Sci-fi, historical fiction, literary novels, games, campaigns, whatever. If the project has connected ideas, it can use it.
Does Writality have fixed worldbuilding templates?
It has structure. Concepts are flexible because every project starts caring about different things.
How does worldbuilding connect to the manuscript?
The surrounding material stays close to the draft. You write in segments, build the manuscript, and keep the characters, places, events and relationships nearby while you do it.
